The business stakes are compounding. Amazon's search ranking is heavily influenced by review count, recency, and average rating. Above that threshold, the manual approach degrades: records get skipped, categorization drifts, and the time-to-signal stretches beyond operational usefulness.

The identifier problem

Amazon reviews are tied to ASIN — Amazon's 10-character identifier for a specific listing (B0CH7K2LNP, etc.). The ASIN is product-plus-variant specific: one color or size is one ASIN. For a brand's internal systems, the product is usually identified by Model# (marketing and merchandising) or UPC (manufacturing and logistics). These two usually don't map one-to-one — a single Model# can have 5–20 ASINs across variants, and a single ASIN can cover a Model# family on Amazon's side.

Analysis that doesn't resolve ASINs to your internal Model# produces reports the product team can't act on. The PM owns "Model 7," not "B0CH7K2LNP, B0CH7K3LNR, B0CH7K4LNS" individually. Resolution is the prerequisite for everything downstream.

The process, step by step

Pull reviews

Three pull modes, best to worst. Native ingestion via a VoC platform with an Amazon connector — reliable, continuous, at-scale. Amazon's Product Advertising API — covers some metadata but has tight limits on review retrieval. Manual CSV export from Seller Central or Vendor Central — works but produces files that age quickly and don't cover competitor ASINs.

For your own ASINs, the platform ingestion + Seller Central combination covers 100% of reviews. For competitor ASINs (useful for benchmarking), platforms that support competitor-ASIN ingestion are the only practical option.

Link ASINs to Model# (or UPC)

Build the mapping table. Every ASIN gets one row: ASIN, Model#, variant (color/size/config), launch date, active/discontinued status. For a brand with 300 Model#s and 1,500 ASINs, the mapping is 1,500 rows — manageable as a one-time effort, critical as a live-maintained asset.

Store the mapping in a place the entire organization can read. Snowflake, a shared Google Sheet, or in Indellia (which stores and maintains the mapping as part of SKU Agent). The mapping is VoC infrastructure — treat it that way.

Normalize across retailers

Amazon is one channel. Walmart, Best Buy, Costco, Lowe's, Target, Home Depot, and Bazaarvoice-powered retailer pages each use their own identifiers. Normalize all of them to the same Model# identity as Amazon's ASIN — the result is one SKU record accumulating feedback across every channel it sells on.

The payoff is cross-channel comparison. An issue showing up on Amazon but not Walmart may be a listing-specific problem (bad images, misleading description). An issue showing up everywhere is a product problem. The difference is a decision.

Classify and cluster

Tag each review against your shared taxonomy. Theme (battery, lens, packaging, setup, documentation). Issue type (broken, unclear, missing). The Bazaarvoice caveat

Many retailer review pages are powered by Bazaarvoice — Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, and dozens of smaller retailers syndicate reviews through Bazaarvoice's platform. A single review may appear on multiple retailer pages; a review submitted on Walmart.com may also show on Target.com if both retailers subscribe to the same syndication ring.

For analysis, this means deduplication matters. Counting the same review five times across five retailer pages inflates theme volume and distorts per-retailer comparison. Indellia deduplicates on ingestion using Bazaarvoice's review identifier where available.
