AI agents for customer feedback, explained.

"AI agent" is 2026's most marketed and least defined phrase. Some vendors call a scheduled report an agent; others reserve the word for multi-step planning systems. Neither is especially useful for feedback work. Here is the distinction we think matters — agents act on outcomes, not just summarize — plus a walkthrough of the seven agents Indellia actually ships.

The short answer

An AI agent for customer feedback is a software system that takes an outcome as input (detect anomalies, draft responses, surface defects, link records to SKU) and produces the work that outcome requires — classifying, retrieving, writing, routing. Unlike dashboards (which show data) or workflows (which execute fixed steps), agents make judgments inside a bounded task scope. Good feedback agents are narrow, evaluable, and transparent about their reasoning.

Why the definition argument matters.

Vendors use "AI agent" to mean whatever sells in Q2 2026. This is normal in the early years of a category. But for buyers, the conceptual sprawl is expensive — you end up comparing a system that writes response drafts against a system that sends scheduled Slack pings, because both are shipping with "agent" on the label.

The distinction that actually helps is between systems that summarize and systems that act. A dashboard tells you anomalies exist. A workflow triggers an alert when an anomaly threshold is crossed. An agent decides what counts as an anomaly for this SKU given its launch phase and historical baseline, surfaces it with a justification, and optionally takes the next step — creating a ticket, drafting a response, pinging the product owner.

Five tests for a real feedback agent.

We use these internally when deciding whether something qualifies for the "agent" label.

Outcome scope, not task scope. "Find anomalies on any SKU" is an outcome. "Run this SQL query every Monday" is a task. Agents are defined by the outcome they are accountable for.

Judgment under ambiguity. A review that says "it's fine" can be positive or lukewarm depending on context. An agent has to make a call. A rules engine cannot.

Evaluable against ground truth. You can measure the agent against human judgment on the same inputs. Without this, "the agent is doing a great job" is a vibe.

Grounded output. Claims the agent makes can be traced to the underlying records — reviews, tickets, returns — not fabricated from thin air.

Bounded cost and latency. The agent has a predictable cost per unit of work. If the agent can run unboundedly on any question and generate $0.80 of LLM tokens per call, it does not ship to production.

Handles retailer-specific identifier schemes (Amazon ASIN, Walmart Item ID, Best Buy SKU, Target TCIN, Home Depot IDs) and normalizes them against the brand's internal catalog. This is the SKU-level layer that separates consumer-brand work from generic feedback analytics.

Where agentic feedback actually pays off.

The visible payoff is time — analysts spend less of the week on aggregation and tagging and more on interpretation. The less visible payoff is cadence. Dashboards require someone to go look. Agents run on their own schedule, push signal to the right team, and keep the organization aware of what is happening without a weekly ritual.

A concrete example: a QA engineer who previously filed a monthly defect report from warranty data now gets a Slack message when the Defect Agent detects a rising defect theme on a specific SKU. The engineer reads the cited reviews, decides whether the signal warrants intervention, and escalates. The same engineer, without agents, would learn about the same issue six weeks later in the warranty claims roll-up. Six weeks of production is the cost of dashboard-only analytics.

Where agents should not go (yet).
