The key phrase is "applies judgment." A function that transforms input to output by fixed rules is a function. A system that decides, given ambiguity in the input, what the best next action is, is an agent. Agents vs workflows

A workflow executes predetermined steps. "Ingest new Amazon reviews, run polarity classification, write to the database, trigger Slack alert if negative-review count exceeds threshold." Predictable, debuggable, limited.

An agent operates within a task scope with judgment. "Watch for anomalies in review volume, sentiment, and rating per SKU-theme combination. Surface the ones that are most likely to matter." The agent has to decide what "anomaly" means relative to expected behavior, what "most likely to matter" means given context, and how to explain its surfacing.

What makes a good feedback agent

Five properties we look for.

Narrow scope. An agent that does one thing well beats an agent that does five things adequately. "Cluster reviews into themes" is a good scope. "Handle all feedback" is not.

Evaluable. You can measure the agent against a ground truth. For a theme agent: does a human labeler agree with the theme assignments? For an anomaly agent: are the flagged anomalies actually anomalous?

The future of agentic feedback

Three directions matter over the next 18 months, as of Q1 2026 Verified · Q1 2026.
